Nortel Switches and Data Networking

The Nortel Ethernet Switch 470 models are stackable 10/100 Mbps Ethernet Layer 2 switches. The Ethernet Switch 470 includes two built-in GBIC (Gigabit Interface Converter) uplink ports and built-in stacking ports in a compact, 1 rack-unit high design. They are designed to provide high-density desktop connectivity for mid-size and large enterprise customers' wiring closets.
Nortel's Ethernet Switch 470 is available in two models:
The Ethernet Switch 470-48T allows configuration flexibility: Port 47 and Port 48 can be configured as either 10/100BASE-TX or make use of the built-in GBIC. Up to eight Ethernet Switch 470-48T models can be stacked to achieve up to 384 10/100 ports for high-density desktop switching. The Ethernet Switch 470-24T allows all 26 ports to be used simultaneously. With BoSS, up to eight switches can combine with the Ethernet Switch 470-24T and 470-48T in a single stack for maximum flexibility
Key Features: Nortel Networking Basics
- High-density, high-speed desktop switching
- Two built-in GBIC ports
- Innovative built-in stacking ports
- BoSS v3.0 (Ethernet Switch Software) - a single software image supporting four different switch types
- Distributed MultiLink Trunking (DMLT) across switches in the stack
Features & Benefits
Choice of twenty four (24) or forty eight (48) 10/100BASE-TX RJ-45 ports provides high-speed desktop switching.
- Two built-in GBIC ports provide dedicated uplink connectivity to other switches, servers, or network core switches such as Nortel's Ethernet Routing Switch 8600.
- Built-in stacking ports allow eight Ethernet Switch 470 and other Ethernet Switches to be combined in a single stack, for maximum flexibility. Up to 384 ports in a stack.
- Stacks with four different switch types: Ethernet Switch 460-24T-PWR, Business Policy Switch, Ethernet Switches 470-48T and 470-24T using BoSS. The Ethernet Switch 470-24T can also stack with the Ethernet Switch 450.
- Up to 16 GBIC ports are available for pure uplink connectivity in a full stack -- the highest in the market -- because GBIC ports are not sacrificed for stacking.
- Distributed MultiLink Trunking (DMLT) across switches in the stack allow trunked ports to span multiple units of the stack for fail-safe connectivity to mission critical servers and the network center with active redundant links in one trunk. MultiLink Trunking (MLT) groups ports on one or more units in a stack to provide up to 800 Mbps (when used with 10/100 ports) or up to 8 Gbps (when used with Gigabit uplink ports).
- Highest levels of security are provided by features including Secure Shell (SSH), IEEE 802.1x based security (also known as Extensible Authentication Protocol - EAP), Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMPv3), IP Manager's list, MAC-address based security and Remote Authentication Dial-In User Services (RADIUS) authentication. User and administrator authentication limit access to only authorized and trusted personnel; encryption protects the confidentiality of management transactions.
- Quality of Service features such as traffic classification, prioritization, policing, shaping, and marking enable networks to offer reliable connectivity and required bandwidth for delay-intolerant and mission-critical applications such as VoIP.
- Support for up to 16,000 MAC addresses per switch enables deployment of large-scale enterprise networks with many attached devices and workgroups.
- Up to 256 port-based and protocol-based VLANs can be established for each switch or across a switch stack to extend the broadcast domain and segment network traffic.
- Built-in Web-based management or Optivity integration makes it easy for network administrators to manage status and configurations via the local corporate intranet or from any Web-connected PC, anywhere in the world.
Product Benefits:
- High-density desktop connectivity is provided, thanks to the Ethernet Switch 470 10/100BASE-TX RJ-45 ports for desktop switching and two built-in GBIC ports for uplink. Up to eight switches can be stacked to achieve up to 384 10/100 ports for high-density desktop switching.
- Cost-effective, plug-and-play stacking results from two built-in stacking ports which provide simpler, quicker, and more cost-effective stacking, as expensive stacking modules are not required. This unique stacking design frees up both the uplink ports for dedicated connectivity to the backbone.
- Higher uplink capacity is afforded by the two built-in GBIC ports for dedicated uplink connectivity to network core switches such as Ethernet Routing Switch 8600. This doubles the uplink bandwidth, as GBIC ports are not required for stacking purposes. Up to 16 GBIC ports are available for pure uplink connectivity in a full stack -- the highest in the market.
- Fail-Safe stacking design assures continuous uptime even if a single switch in the stack should fail -- eliminating a single point of failure.
- Protection of existing investment provided for Ethernet Switch 450 and Business Policy Switch: the Ethernet Switch 470-24T can stack with both the Ethernet Switch 450 and the Business Policy Switch.
- Resilient connectivity for minimal network downtime results from Nortel's unique Distributed MultiLink Trunking (DMLT) feature, where trunked ports can span multiple units of the stack for fail-safe connectivity to mission-critical servers and the network center. Ethernet Routing Switch 8600's Split MultiLink Trunking (SMLT) eliminates single points of failure in the network and allows Ethernet Switch 470 to have multiple active connections to the network core.
- High availability QoS features provides network availability for mission-critical applications (i.e. IP Telephony), devices, and users by classifying, prioritizing, and marking LAN traffic.
- Secure access and data traffic protection includes SSH, BaySecure, RADIUS, IP Manager List, Access List, SNMP v3, password protection and Extensible Authentication Protocol (EAP) over LAN.
Ethernet Switch 460-24T

The Nortel Ethernet Switch 460-24T-PWR is an IEEE 802.3af compliant switch to power devices such as IP phones, wireless access points, network cameras, security and lighting devices, and access control devices. It has 24 10/100 Mbps autosensing ports - all of which can provide power - one MDA (Media Dependent Adapter) slot for uplink connectivity, and one cascade module slot for stacking. In addition to Power over Ethernet capability, the switch has advanced features such as Quality of Service (QoS) and high resiliency. It enables enterprise customers to power devices while maintaining connectivity to standard 10/100 Mbps Ethernet devices such as PCs and servers.
Key Features:
- The Ethernet Switch 460-24T-PWR is IEEE 802.3af standards compliant and can provide power to all 24 ports.
- Enables data and power to be transmitted over a single cable without using power outlets.
- It can be used in a standalone or in a stack of up to eight switches that can be easily managed as a single unit.
- With its auto discovery feature, the switch automatically recognizes the connection of a device and immediately sends power to it.
- It is QoS-enabled to provide network availability for mission-critical applications - such as IP telephony - devices, and users. Its extensive security features offer protection against unauthorized access to data traffic.
- BoSS (Ethernet Switch Software) allows Ethernet Switch 460-24T-PWR, Business Policy Switch, Ethernet Switch 470-48T, and Ethernet Switch 470-24T to stack together with a single image
